A growing part of our business, and one of the most interesting, is contract cutting boat parts. We've been computer-cutting plywood parts for three years, on projects ranging from the planks for our QuickLap canoes, to mold parts for Rob Ladd's Oxford Express cruiser, to kit parts for the family boatbuilding program at the 1998 and 1999 WoodenBoat shows. Collaborating with designer Karl Stambaugh, we've worked on developing kits for several boats from his Windward Design's collection, including his Scout kayak, the 9' Weekend Dinghy, and several of his Redwing series of power cruisers.
This experience allows us to offer several levels of cutting services to boatbuilders, designers, and Naval Architects. If we are supplied with drawings that are "machine ready", with the required bit offsets, cutter toolpath, and sheet layout so that they are ready to be converted to cutting files, parts can be cut for a $50/hr machining charge. If you don't feel confident or have the time to supply drawings that are "machine ready", we can create cutting files from CAD drawings, measurements of developed panels or structural parts, or sometimes even from scanned images. Feel free to contact us if you need these services; we'll be glad to work with you to make your project a reality
There may also be some of you that only have a concept in mind, and need more thorough design services than we can provide. We have an on-going working relationship with Naval Architect Karl Stambaugh, whose firm Chesapeake Marine Design can help you develop your boat design with our style of computer-cutting in mind.
Please contact us if you have any questions or need more specific information.
