The Weekend Dinghy, the construction example in Karl Stambaugh's new book Good Skiffs, is a great first boatbuilding project and the perfect introduction to stitch-and-glue boatbuilding. Her appealing lines and ease of construction made her an easy choice for the 1999 WoodenBoat Show Family Boatbuilding event.

The Weekend Dinghy

The Weekend Dinghy kit contains all the precut BS 1088 plywood pieces needed to complete the boat. We use our stepped scarfs to make it easy to assemble the side panels to their full length, and all necessary stitch holes are pre-drilled in the panels for easy assembly. You will need to buy a small amount of lumber, some fasteners and hardware, and your favorite epoxy, fillers, and fiberglassing supplies; a parts list is included. Like many things in life, boatbuilders develop a preference for one brand of epoxy over another, and we don't feel that we should dictate which epoxy you should use by supplying in our kits. Epoxy and epoxy supplies are available at most large marine supply stores such as West Marine or Boat/US, many marinas or chandleries, and can also be mail ordered.

The Weekend Trainer

For those interested in a sailing skiff, we can supply the precut plywood parts to turn the Weekend Dinghy into the Weekend Trainer. The parts are cut from the same BS1088 marine plywood as the hull kit, and include the pieces for the daggerboard and trunk, rudder and tiller, mast partner, and mast step. Contour cutting is done on the daggerboard and rudder, requiring just a little bit of sanding for a perfect shape. Both the Weekend Dinghy kit and Weekend Trainer sailrig kit can be shipped by Federal Express.

If you are not sure that you are ready to tackle a full-sized boat, we also cut a 1/4 scale model of the Weekend Dinghy. It includes all the parts of the full size kit, and can be assembled with epoxy fillets like the real boat, or using a hot-glue gun. The model includes 1/4 scale computer-cut versions of all the parts in the full-size kit, full instructions, and cable ties for assembly.
